An unwed mom’s unsuccessful battle in the Supreme Court shows how judiciary, regulations link parenthood to marriage

Investment banker Devi* Bose’s family looked for a match for her for years, but their quest was unsuccessful as she has the Mayer-Rokistanky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome due to which she was born without a uterus. Though the 38-year-old couldn’t conceive or carry a baby, she was desperate to have a child that was genetically her own.

That’s why she recently approached Mumbai-based infertility specialist Dr Anjali Malpani for surrogacy. But Dr Malpani turned her down because single women are not allowed to go for surrogacy as per the current regulations.
