NEW DELHI: The BJP appeared set to form the government in Manipur after the party on Monday appointed senior leader Tarun Chugh as central observer to oversee the election of the leader of its legislature party in the northeastern state, which has been under President’s rule since February last year.
The move came ahead of the expiry of the President's Rule, which was imposed on February 13, 2025, and extended in August. It also followed the arrival of BJP-led NDA legislators from Manipur in the national capital after they were summoned by the party’s central leadership.
"BJP Parliamentary Board has appointed Shri @tarunchughbjp, the National General Secretary, as the Central Observer for the election of the leader of the legislative party in Manipur," BJP national general secretary Arun Singh said in a statement.
President's rule was imposed after the NDA government, headed by BJP's N Biren Singh, resigned on February 9, 2025. This came after ethnic violence erupted in the state between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023, drawing sharp criticism of the Singh government for its failure to contain the conflict.
Chugh hails from Amritsar in Punjab and has previously served as the party’s in-charge for Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
