Women and children were particularly vulnerable, with 11 women losing their lives after being overwhelmed and trapped by the surging crowd. Most victims died due to asphyxia (suffocation), though some suffered fractures as well.

Reeling in excruciating grief at the loss of his seven-year-old daughter Riya, who suffered a fatal head injury when an iron rod pierced her skull during the stampede, Opil Singh, said, "I was heading to the platform, when I saw a massive crowd. My wife with my other child had gone up the stairway, but my daughter and I got stuck in the middle. People started falling on us. Amid this, an iron rod pierced through my daughter's head. I lifted my daughter in my arms and rushed to the hospital in an auto rickshaw, but by the time we reached, it was too late. The doctors declared her dead." A resident of Sagarpur, south west Delhi, Singh said no compensation can bring his daughter back to him.

The actual stampede lasted approximately 15 minutes. The most crucial relief came from authorities' swift response in evacuating the platforms whilst arranging special trains to transport stranded passengers. Had it not been for these timely measures, the casualties could have been significantly higher. "Multiple special trains were immediately pressed into service and passengers were sent to their destination, evacuating the platforms," said a senior officer.

There were early signs of trouble. Around 8.15pm, two hours prior to the stampede, several X users began posting about the growing crowd near the platforms. Yet, no measures were taken to manage the situation, it has been alleged.

The Delhi Police has found in its initial investigation the deadly stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station happened as passengers got confused between 'Prayagraj Express and Prayagraj Special', and thought they might miss their train, police sources said on Sunday. According to the preliminary investigation, the confusion happened because of the announcement of the trains having same initial name 'Prayagraj', said the sources.

The announcement of the 'Prayagraj Special' arriving at Platform 16 led to confusion among the waiting passengers because the Prayagraj Express was already at Platform 14.

People who were reaching Platform 14 thought their train was arriving at Platform 16 and they rushed towards it, leading to the stampede, the sources said.

Additionally, there were four trains heading to Prayagraj, out of which three were delayed, causing an unexpected overcrowding, said the police source.

A witness also told PTI, "There was confusion among the passengers regarding the train names and the change of platforms of the trains. Which ultimately led to the tragedy."

Delhi stampede: Most bodies had chest, abdomen injuries, asphyxia suspected, say RML Hospital sources

Most of the bodies of the deceased brought to the national capital's Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital following the stampede at the New Delhi Railway station had injuries on their chest and abdomen areas with asphyxia being the likely cause of death, according to RML hospital sources.

The injured admitted to the LNJP hospital in the national capital have been discharged by the doctors after primary treatment. A team of 15 doctors is currently taking care of the injured patients.

Delhi Police Sunday launched an investigation into the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station that killed at least 18 people, saying it will analyse CCTV footage to determine what transpired before the chaos erupted, sources said. "Our main target is to investigate the main cause which caused the stampede. We will collect all data of CCTV footage and announcements done during that time," a police source said.

The source said a wrong announcement about change of platforms may have caused a confusion and led to the stampede.

The stampede was preceded by a swell in crowd of passengers waiting to board trains for Prayagraj -- where the Maha Kumbh is underway -- on platform number 14 and 15 of the station.
