BHUBANESWAR: The downsizing of Odisha opposition leader and former chief minister (CM) Naveen Patnaik's security cover to Y-category has sparked a political contro-versy, with Biju Janata Dal criticising the decision and BJP mocking the criticism, reports Riyan Ramanath V.
"He (Naveen) was the CM for five consecutive terms. This decision by govt is baffling. They must ensure that his security remains uncompromised," BJD's Sanjay Das Burma told the media.
The state govt scaled down Patnaik's security on Friday for the second time since BJP took office, following recommendations of a high-level security committee. As CM, Patnaik had Z-category security, with over 200 personnel protecting him, his motorcade, residence, and routes.
After BJD's defeat in assembly polls, this security detail was reduced to 45 personnel. Now, under Y-category security, he will get 10 personnel - a house guard, an escort, and two personal security officers.
Former opposition leader and BJP MLA Jaya Narayan Mishra commented, "Why are these people demanding security? Is there something they have done that makes them fearful?"
Clarifying about the new security adjustment, DGP Y B Khurania told reporters, "It's a routine exercise with no other reason or meaning."
