Officers investigating the syndicate say that Shetty used to bail out producers from financial crises.
MUMBAI: The investigations into the dance bar-cricket betting syndicate took a filmi twist on Monday when Sudhakar Shetty, a partner of Deepa Bar, was interrogated by the city police for five hours in the case of crorepati dancer Tarannum. Shetty has part-financed the recent Hindi blockbusters Dus and No Entry. A senior officer said that Shetty had been financing films for a long time and was also known to bail out producers from financial crises.
Film producer Nitin Manmohans last release, Dus, has Shettys name in the credit titles. However, Manmohan, when questioned about taking financial help from the bar owner, denied it, saying, "My film was financed by Venkys group and not Sudhakar Shetty."
According to industry sources, Shetty also came to the rescue of Boney Kapoor at the time of the release of No Entry. But Kapoor denied this point-blank, saying, "I have got nothing to do with Sudhakar Shetty. My friends and relatives helped me out during the crisis." Shetty has several other film connections. A year ago, he was planning to open a restaurant in partnership with a superstar and a producer whose films he had earlier financed.
He also financed the first film of an upcoming starlet who is said to be a close friend of the son of a Haryana politician with whom Shetty is very thick. In fact, Shetty, who also has a construction company, has reportedly taken up a huge property development project in partnership with the politician at Anna Nagar in Worli. The deal was allegedly brokered by a senior Shiv Sena politician. Shettys friend Ajay Namandar is also likely to be questioned by the police.
