MTNL's mega cellular lines tender in May
NEW DELHI: State-owned telecom company MTNL, which operates in Delhi and Mumbai, is expected to finalise the tender for four million cellular lines by mid-May.
MTNL is looking to add two million cellular lines each in the two cities. The contract for Mumbai will go to ITI-Alcatel, under government rules that 30% of new capacities be reserved for ITI, which has a manufacturing JV with French major Alcatel.
"Instead of splitting the contract for Delhi and Mumbai circles into two vendors each, we have decided to give one entire circle to ITI-Alcatel to avoid technical and compatibility issues," MTNL CMD RSP Sinha told TOI.

The per line cost will be decided after the tender is finalised.
Of the total four million lines, about 1.5 million will be for 3G (third generation) networks, which enable people to download video clips, music, pictures and graphics on their cellphones at very high speeds.
"All the major vendors are participating in the process," said Sinha. Although still behind private operators like Airtel and Hutch in overall subscriber numbers in the two cities, MTNL's Dolphin cellular service has grown rapidly in the past 18 months.
It had 1.94 million subscribers at the end of March this year, up from 0.88 million in March 2005 0.48 million subscribers in Mumbai and 0.40 million in Delhi.
"We have increased our market share tremendously in both the cities over the past one year. At one million subscribers, we have over 18% market share now (from about 12% last March). In Delhi, we have garnered a market share of over 16% (from about 9%), at 0.93 million subscribers," said Sinha.
On other businesses, Sinha said MTNL saw positive additions for landline connections in January and February. The company has been losing landline subscribers to private competition.
From four million landline subscribers in the two cities, MTNL has about 3.8 million connections now. Its broadband subscribers have grown to over two lakhs.
