‘More people have cardiac depression than we think’

Any cardiac procedure — whether it’s a pacemaker or a valve surgery — does take a mental toll on patients, with medical literature saying almost half of them have chances of experiencing cardiac depression. Rajesh Vijayvargiya, professor and interventional cardiologist at PGIMER Chandigarh, talks to Shimona Kanwar about the effect of cardiac intervention on a patient’s mental well-being

What is cardiac depression?

It’s quite natural for a patient to feel low or anxious during the early days after his cardiac procedure. They become psychologically weak and require family and/or social support to come out of this. Cardiac depression is the extreme stage of this spectrum and is diagnosed by a professional psychiatrist.
