Honouring heroes: PM Modi's visit to Kargil for the 25th anniversary of Vijay Divas

PM Modi paid homage to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1999 Kargil War at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh. This tribute marked the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, a day commemorating India's victory in reclaiming strategic positions in Kargil from infiltrators. The ceremony was attended by top military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff and the Chief of Army Staff.

During his visit to the Kargil Museum, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers who fought in the Kargil War. Modi's visit underscored the government's commitment to honoring the legacy of the soldiers and remembering the pivotal moments of the 1999 conflict, reinforcing the significance of national pride and military dedication.

PM Modi highlighted the significant reforms undertaken in the defence sector over the past decade. These reforms have made the Indian armed forces more capable and self-reliant. The Prime Minister pointed out that a considerable portion of defence procurement is now allocated to the Indian defence industry, boosting domestic production and innovation.

In his address, PM Modi emphasised the Agnipath scheme, aimed at rejuvenating the Indian Army by recruiting younger soldiers. He underscored that the scheme addresses the long-standing demand for reforms in the defence sector, ensuring that the army remains fit and capable of handling contemporary warfare challenges.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the Shinkun La Tunnel project in Kargil, Ladakh. This 4.1-kilometre-long twin-tube tunnel, located at an altitude of 15,800 feet on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha Road, will provide all-weather connectivity to Leh. Upon completion, it will be the highest tunnel in the world, significantly enhancing military logistics and fostering economic development in the region.

PM Modi reiterated his vision for a strong and young Indian Army. He emphasised that the Agnipath scheme is designed to maintain the army's continuous fitness for war and to align the age profile of Indian soldiers with global standards. The scheme aims to ensure that the army remains agile, modern, and prepared for future challenges.

PM Modi criticised opposition parties for politicising the Agnipath scheme, a crucial national security reform. He accused them of weakening the armed forces through corruption and hindering modernisation efforts. The Prime Minister highlighted the opposition's role in delaying the acquisition of modern fighter jets and the development of indigenous defense technology.

The 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrations included a variety of cultural and patriotic events. These included a motorcycle riding show, martial arts displays, patriotic songs, and performances by school children. These events were designed to honour the bravery of the Kargil War heroes and foster a sense of national pride and unity among the participants.
