Menar: A model of harmony in wildlife conservation earns global recognition

Menar, a lively village near Udaipur in Rajasthan, distinguishes itself by providing a home to thousands of resident and migratory birds, despite lacking official designation as a bird reserve.

The residents of Menar, known as Menarias, exhibit unwavering love and dedication to the welfare of birds. This commitment is evident in the village's two lakes, teeming with fish and water, creating a sanctuary for over 150 bird species.

Menarias actively adhere to the "Save water, save birds" initiative, prohibiting hunting and fishing in all water bodies. Villagers refrain from utilizing lake water for drinking, washing, or irrigation, reserving these lakes and ponds exclusively for the well-being of the birds.

The conservation endeavors of Menarias are immortalized in the short film "Wings of Hope: A Bustling Village and its Bird Friends," crafted by Roundglass Sustain and filmmaker Gunjan Menon. This film recently earned the 2023 Audience Choice Award at the UN World Wildlife Day Film Showcase, garnering global acclaim. Sunny Gurpreet Singh, founder of Roundglass believes that if we can collectively channel our efforts and resources towards safeguarding the natural world, we would have accomplished something truly meaningful in our lives."

Menar serves as an exemplary model of community-based biodiversity conservation. Villagers engage proactively in wildlife conservation, recognizing the interconnectedness of economic, social, and security factors with the preservation of local wildlife and habitats.

Menar's noteworthy conservation achievements have led to its official declaration as a wetland, with a nomination for a Ramsar site tag.
