NEW DELHI: Data shared by government in Parliament on women's representation in lead roles as chairman and managing director of public sector banks shows that of 11 sanctioned posts, 10 are held by men. State Bank of India too has a male chairman, and out of four posts sanctioned, three managing directors are in position and all are men.
These details are part of a written response to a question raised in Lok Sabha on Dec 6 on women's representation in legislatures and top posts in boards and banks.
The woman and child development ministry said that as per the Public Enterprises Survey 2022-23 of central public sector enterprises, there are 39 women directors on the board of all CPSE's out of the total 521 functional directors.
Govt informed Parliament that the total number of women contesting general elections has increased from 3% in 1957 to 10% in 2024. The total number of elected women members, which was 22 in the first Lok Sabha rose to 27 in the second, and to 78 in the 17th Lok Sabha. The number is 75 in the 18th Lok Sabha which is approximately 14% of the total members. In Rajya Sabha, the total number of women members in 1952 was 15, which is 39 at present. It is approximately 17% of the total members.
Govt also said the country has about 14.5 lakh elected women representatives in panchayati raj institutions, which is about 46% of the total elected representatives.
