BATHINDA: Poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s daughter Salima Hashmi joined students and civil society members in Pakistan who gathered at press clubs in Lahore and Karachi on Wednesday to pledge solidarity with the victims of violence in JNU and police action against anti-CAA protesters at Jamia Millia Islamia and
Aligarh Muslim University.
‘Hum Dekhenge’, written by Faiz in 1979 against General Muhammad Zia-ul Haq’s repressive dictatorship and brand of authoritarian Islam, has become an anthem for anti-CAA protesters in India.
Protesters in Lahore and Karachi condemned the “merciless beating up” of students of JNU, and the action in Jamia and AMU.
The Lahore protest was organised by Progressive Students Collective and was themed on Faiz’s poem. Nearly 200 people attended it. The Karachi protest, organised by the Inter-University Feminist Union saw a similar strength. Hashmi participated in the protest at Lahore. Noted writer and poet Fahmida Riaz’s daughter Veerta also attended the protest.
