According to the Delhi Fire Service, fire tenders are on the spot and efforts are being made to douse the fire.

Dense smoke

Ghazipur landfill continued to emit dense columns of smoke into the air on Monday, hours after a major fire broke out there. The Delhi Fire Service reported that the gases generated within the enormous waste pile caused the landfill to experience a major fire.

The fire broke out at the rear end of the Ghazipur landfill, adjacent to the fish market where fresh dumping of waste had recently begun.

To combat the blaze, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi deployed field staff and coordinated with a bio-mining agency, diverting five excavator machines for firefighting efforts.

Numerous residents living in close proximity to the Ghazipur landfill filed complaints of throat and respiratory irritation.

In April 2022, after a major fire broke at the landfill, Delhi environment department launched a nine-point action plan to prevent repeat of such incidents

In March 2023, the deadline for levelling Ghazipur landfill was fixed as December 2024; this was extended to December 2026.

Three incidents of fire were reported at Ghazipur landfill in 2022, including one on March 28, which was doused after over 50 hours.

The cause of the Fire is yet to be ascertained.

Further details are awaited.

Earlier in the day a massive fire broke out in the ground area of an under-construction complex of the new Central Secretariat in Delhi, officials said.
