Maoist killed in Malkangiri encounter

A Maoist was killed, and a district voluntary force jawan injured in an encounter between Naxals and security forces in Odisha's Malkangiri district, near Chhattisgarh border, early Thursday, reports Satyanarayan Pattnaik. "The injured jawan was airlifted to Visakhapatnam for treatment," said DIG Niti Sekhar. "We had intelligence inputs about 15 Maoists gathering near Jinelguda after crossing Saveri river. When our personnel spotted them, the Maoists opened fire, prompting our team to retaliate," said police. The exchange of gunfire lasted for over an hour, after which the Maoists escaped. Police recovered Maoist articles and arms from the encounter site. It marks the first police-Maoist encounter in Malkangiri in nearly two years.
