Manmohan Singh Passes Away: Manmohan Singh cremated with full honours; Mauritius, Bhutan fly flags at half-mast

A State Funeral will be held at Nigambodh Ghat.

Veerappa Moily said, "He is the greatest prime minister this country has seen. He was invested in the Constitution of India. He lifted millions of people out of poverty. He irradicated the License Raj and lifted the economy of this country. He was a champion of peace."

The statement read, "Jill and I (US President Biden) join the people of India in grieving the loss of former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh...During this difficult time, we recommit to this vision to which Prime Minister Singh dedicated his life."

If we are looking at the rest of the world, we are now in a good position. It’s the result of a lot of work in which Dr Manmohan Singh probably had the single largest contribution.

Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, along with party MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have arrived at the AICC headquarters.

The mortal remains of former PM Manmohan Singh will be placed there at 8:30 am for party workers to pay their respects. The last rites will follow, in accordance with family traditions.

There were occasions when we differed. But that did not come in the way of executing the ideas. There was also the quality of humility in him, which was extraordinary. For aperson who held such important positions, he never rode roughshod over anybody.

Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti expressed her condolences on the demise of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, describing him as a man of few words but significant action. She highlighted his crucial role in the 2002 PDP-Congress alliance formation.

Speaking about his contributions, Mehbooba Mufti said, "We have gathered here today to pay our last respects to former PM Manmohan Singh who died yesterday. When the entire world was going through an economic crisis, it did not affect India as Dr Manmohan Singh handled the economy well. I have known him personally since 2002 when PDP and Congress were in talks for an alliance. Back then, Sonia Gandhi sent Manmohan Singh here, and for the first time in my life, I met such a humble person. He played a crucial role to ally then and he played an important role in preparing the agenda."

8:30 am: The mortal remains will be brought to the AICC office at 24, Akbar Road, for public homage.
9:45 am: The funeral cortège will proceed from 24, Akbar Road, to Nigambodh Ghat for the cremation.
11:30 am: A State Funeral will be held at Nigambodh Ghat.​

The government has decided to allocate space for a memorial dedicated to former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) announced on Friday.

According to the MHA, Union home Minister Amit Shah informed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge about the decision shortly after the Cabinet meeting.

"Today morning, Government received a request to allocate space for a memorial for former Prime Minister Late Dr Manmohan Singh, from the Congress Party President," stated the MHA.

The statement further noted, "Immediately after the Cabinet meeting, Home Minister Amit Shah communicated to Congress President Kharge and the family of Late Dr Manmohan Singh that the Government will allocate space for the memorial. In the meanwhile cremation and other formalities can happen because a trust has to be formed and space has to be allocated to it."

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has described former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as a "great son of India" and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to conduct his last rites at a location where a memorial can be established.

In a letter referencing their earlier phone conversation, Kharge wrote, "I am writing this in the context of the sad demise of Dr Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India. Apropos our telephonic conversation this morning, wherein I requested to hold Dr Manmohan Singh's last rites, which will take place tomorrow i.e. 28th December 2024, at his final resting place that would be a sacrosanct venue for the memorial of the great son of India. This is in keeping with such tradition of having memorials of statesmen and former Prime Ministers at the very place of their funerals."

The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a traffic advisory in preparation for the funeral of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, scheduled for Saturday. The advisory details restrictions and diversions on key routes in New Delhi and advises the public to avoid specific roads and use public transport to reduce congestion.

In its Friday statement, the Delhi Traffic Police noted, "The dignitaries of many of foreign country and other VIPs/VVIPS and the general public will visit Nigham Bodh Ghat on the occasion of state funeral of late Manmohan Singh, Former PM of India on 28.12.2024."

The advisory lists diversion points, including Raja Ram Kohli Marg, Rajghat Red Light, Signature Bridge, and Yudhister Setu. Traffic regulations, restrictions, and diversions are expected on Ring Road (Mahatma Gandhi Marg), Nishad Raj Marg, Boulevard Road, SPM Marg, Lothian Road, and Netaji Subhash Marg from 7:00 am to approximately 3:00 pm.
