Maharashtra assembly poll: 'Viksit Maharashtra' needed for 'Viksit Bharat,' Jaishankar says

As the Maharashtra assembly election draws nearer, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated on Sunday that 'Viksit Maharashtra' is needed to achieve 'Viksit Bharat', adding that the state is always ahead in contributing to the national development.

Jaishankar, while speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, said, "In the third term of Modi government, we are working so fast, our aim is 'Viksit Bharat' for which we also need 'Viksit Maharashtra'....Maharashtra has always been the leading state in contributing to the national development."

"We want the double-engine government to be successful in Maharashtra as it was in many other places," he added.

He further noted that India is the leader in fighting terrorism.

"Mumbai is a symbol of counter-terrorism for India and the world. When we were members of the UNSC, we were presidents of the counter-terrorism committee. We held the security council meeting for the first time in the hotel where a terrorist attack took place, in Mumbai. When the world sees - who is standing firm in front of this challenge of terrorism, people say--India. Today, we are leaders in fighting terrorism... We should not have a repeat of what happened in Mumbai. We are very clear; we also need to expose terrorism," Jaishankar said in Mumbai.

Jharkhand assembly elections: Will work on development of people, says BJP candidate Babu Lal Soren

Ahead of the Jharkhand Assembly polls which are to be held in two phases on November 13 and November 20, son of the former Chief Minister Champai Soren and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Ghatshila assembly, Babu Lal Soren, said that he would work for the development of the people.

Speaking to ANI, Soren said, "The issue is the development of the people. We have three issues in development, the migration happening inside the Ghatshila assembly and the laborers going to the other states. We will work on employing them."

Further, Soren added that the issue of migration would be addressed and ambulances would be arranged in every Panchayat.

"We will stop migration and after that, when it comes to health, I have my resolve that we will arrange an ambulance in every Panchayat and sub-health centre. We will also work on providing digital education in the coming days," he said.

Maharashtra election: Cong releases total lists of 39 candidates, nominates 4 women, 6 SCs and 6 STs

MPCC general secretary Sachin Sawant, AICC secretary Ganesh Yadav, developer Kalu Badheliya, former legislator Asif Zakaria, former MPCC president Manikrao Thakre, senior functionary Dayanand Chorghe and Anuja Kedar figure in the second and third lists, a total of 39 candidates, that Congress declared on Saturday for the elections, reports Prafulla Marpakwar.


Jalna legislator Kailash Gortantyal and Nanded South’s Mohan Hambarde are the only two sitting MLAs to have been renominated. Sawant, who was nominated from Andheri West, posted on X late on Saturday his “inability” to contest, saying he had “requested from Bandra E.”


Suresh Bhoyar, son of Congress veteran Yadavrao Bhoyar, will take on BJP president Chandrashekhar Bawankule in Kamptee. Anuja Kedar is the wife of sitting MLA Sunil Kedar, who was barred from contesting after his conviction in a multi-crore scam. Of 39 candidates, four are women, six are from the Scheduled Castes and six from the Scheduled Tribes. In the first list, Congress had released names for 48 seats.

Maharashtra Elections 2024 Live Updates: Congress releases 2nd list of 23 candidates

The Congress on Saturday released its second list of 23 candidates for the November 10 Assembly elections in Maharashtra. The list came after the party's Central Election Committee met and discussed the names of the candidates for the polls.

The Congress declared 48 candidates in its first list. With this list, the Congress has now announced 71 candidates.

The opposition party had retained 25 incumbent MLAs in its first list of nominees.

The Congress has also asserted that there were no differences in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition and the final seat-sharing arrangement among its constituents will be out by Saturday evening.

Speaking to reporters after the CEC meeting on Friday, party leader Ramesh Chennithala said the Congress CEC held a discussion on the remaining seats of Maharashtra.

"The MVA is contesting unitedly and we have no differences," Chennithala, who is the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Maharashtra, said.

"We will fight together to realise the dreams of the people of Maharashtra. We are confident that MVA will form the government. People are ready to throw out this corrupt government," Chennithala said.

PCC chief Nana Patole said the MVA will perform better in the Assembly polls than in the Lok Sabha polls, and the MVA will form a full majority government.

"We, the MVA, are all set to sweep the upcoming assembly elections," Venugopal said in a post on X after the deliberations.

He also shared pictures of the CEC meeting on the microblogging platform.

The Congress announced its first list of 48 candidates for the Maharashtra polls on Thursday, fielding Patole from Sakoli, former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan from Karad South and Leader of Opposition in the outgoing Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar from Brahmapuri.

BJP: Priyanka affidavit silent on investment in Associated Journal Ltd

BJP on Friday alleged that Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, contesting Lok Sabha bypoll from Wayanad in Kerala, has omitted key asset details in her election affidavit. Her investment in the Associated Journal Limited (AJL) is missing, the party claimed, referring to the National Herald money laundering case.
“Priyanka Vadra’s affidavit conceals more than it reveals. One of the noted omissions from her affidavit is the investment in Associated Journal Limited (publishing National Herald newspaper). She has also conveniently excluded referring to the case against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the same scam,” BJP IT department head Amit Malviya said on X.

Maharashtra deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, who submitted his nomination papers for Maharashtra assembly polls on Friday, and his banker wife Amruta’s income rose manifold over a decade, a scrutiny of his poll affidavits of 2019 and 2024 revealed.
In 2014-15 fiscal, Fadnavis showed an income of Rs 1.2 lakh, while his wife had an income of Rs 18.3 lakh. This soared to Rs 38.7 lakh and Rs 79.3 lakh respectively in the 2023-24 fiscal. Poll affidavits also revealed Fadnavis earned Rs 1.7 crore between the 2019-20 and 2023-24 fiscals, while his wife earned Rs 5.1 crore in the same period. Fadnavis also has a loan worth Rs 62 lakh and has four pending criminal cases.
Affidavits revealed Amruta has more income and assets than the deputy CM, and the couple grew richer by Rs 4.6 crore over five years, as per poll affidavits of 2019 and 2024. While the couple owns assets of Rs13.3 crore, including land and 1.3 kg of gold of Rs 99 lakh, they currently do not own a car.
On the fourth day of filing nominations on Friday, 991 aspirants filed their papers, including several top politic ians including Fadnavis from Nagpur South-West, Krishna Khopde from Nagpur East, Atul Save from Aurangabad East, Sanjay Shirshat from Aurangabad West and Ram Shinde from Karjat Jamkhed.

After a meeting of the AICC’s central election committee, Thorat said consensus was reached on contesting 90 seats each by the Congress, Sharad Pawar-led NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT), while the remaining 18 seats out of 288 would be distributed among smaller parties.
No senior Congress leader endorsed Thorat’s formula, saying he was not part of the negotiations in New Delhi. “There is no such formula of 90:90:90. In fact, consensus was reached over Congress contesting 104 seats, UBT Sena 95 and NCP (SP) 84, while the remaining seats will be allotted to smaller parties,” a senior Congress politician said.

The Worli assembly seat in Mumbai is set to witness a big electoral bout with former Congress LS MP and currently Shiv Sena RS MP Milind Deora entering the fray against sitting MLA Aaditya Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT).
With Deora’s entry and MNS’s Sandeep Deshpande already having filed his nomination papers from the seat, the fight in fact will be a three-way one, just like in the neighbouring Mahim seat, where there is a Sena (Sada Sarvankar) vs Sena (UBT) (Mahesh Sawant) vs MNS (Amit Thackeray) fight.
“CM Eknath Shinde believes that justice for Worli and Worlikars is long overdue. Together, we’re paving the way forward and will share our vision soon. It’s Worli now!” Deora said in a post on X on Friday, indicating he has been picked for the seat.
