Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, addressing a rally in Simdega, Jharkhand, on Friday, accused the BJP of attempting to seize 'Jal, Jungle, Jameen' (water, forest, land) from tribal communities. He framed the upcoming state elections as an ideological battle between the INDIA bloc and the BJP-RSS combine, alleging that the latter aims to "destroy" the Constitution while his coalition seeks to protect it.

Gandhi criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for referring to tribals as 'vanvasi', claiming that this reflects the BJP's agenda to take over tribal lands under the guise of development for the benefit of capitalists and the RSS. He asserted that the BJP's policies are designed to grab resources from tribal communities.

Highlighting the Congress's promises, Gandhi vowed to conduct a caste census and lift the 50% reservation cap if his party comes to power. He proposed increasing the reservation for Scheduled Tribes (STs) from 26% to 28%, for Scheduled Castes (SCs) from 10% to 12%, and for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) from 14% to 27%.

"The Constitution is under constant attack, and it needs to be safeguarded. We are committed to removing the reservation cap and ensuring social justice," Gandhi declared. He also emphasised the necessity of a caste census to assess the representation of tribals, Dalits, and OBCs in various sectors of the country.

Recalling his previous speech in Parliament, Gandhi said that when he raised the need for a caste census, PM Modi remained silent, later accusing him of wanting to divide the nation.

This rally marked Gandhi’s second visit to Jharkhand after the announcement of the assembly poll schedule. The state elections are set to take place in two phases on November 13 and 20, with the counting of votes scheduled for November 23.

A total of 209 FIRs have been registered in connection with the seizures, Thane Collector Ashok Shingare said during a review meeting with Special Observer (Expenses) B R Balakrishnan on Wednesday, according to an official statement.

Shingare shared a presentation on key numbers associated with the upcoming polls in the Thane district, which has 72,29,339 voters spread across 18 assembly segments. Of them, 22,82,882 are women and 1,415 are from the third gender category.
