Madhumani still on the run, evades CBI
LUCKNOW: Though former UP minister Amarmani Tripathi, prime accused in the Madhumita Shukla murder case, is in the CBI dragnet, his wife, Madhumani, wanted for questioning, is on the run and has been ‘untraceable’ for over a week.
She is the lone important suspect in the case to have eluded the premier investigating agency. Madhu Upadhyay, as she was called before marriage, was the eldest among three sisters and a brother.

Her father Brij Mohan Upadhyay, an employee of the Rampur Distillary, also operated as an agent securing loans from Awas Vikas. After retirement, he floated Sindhukari Awas Samiti in Rampur itself. Madhu started working as a teacher in Greenwood School of Rampur in the mid 80s.
A fluent-talker, she was also an avid newspaper reader. She used to dig into the paper daily to update herself on the dare devilry of bandit queen Phoolan Devi, who was then giving the police of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh a run for their money. Madhu tied the knot with Amarmani in the early 90s. After marriage, her life changed drastically. She adapted herself to the atmosphere at the house of her inlaws but did not approve of her husband’s activities.
Amarmani, who was then with the mafia of Eastern UP, did not pay any heed to her. So, when Madhumani learnt about her husband sleeping with another woman, she was neither surprised nor shocked. She took it in her stride in her usual determined manner.
It is being alleged that after threats failed to yield results, Madhumani approached her brother-in-law (husband of one of her younger sisters) Vinod Tripathi and the conspiracy to eliminate the poet was hatched at his residence in Rudrapur, now in Uttranchal. Madhumita was shot dead on May 9 at her Paper Mill Colony residence. That Madhumani, too, left her Lawrence Terrace house in Hazratganj barely a couple of hours before the poet was shot dead, has caught the attention of the sleuths probing the gory killing.
