NEW DELHI: Congress' Sukhdeo Bhagat emerges victorious by winning 4,83,038 votes. He defeated BJP candidate Samir Oraon by a margin of 1,39,138 votes.
Lohardaga is a parliamentary constituency in Jharkhand reserved for Scheduled Tribes. It is one of the four reserved constituencies in the state. The residents of the constituency voted in the fourth phase nationally on May 13 which was also the first phase within the state.
The outgoing MP, Sudarshan Bhagat, secured three consecutive terms before being replaced this year. The BJP aims to retain the seat for a fourth consecutive term, fielding former Rajya Sabha member Samir Oraon.
He is competing against Congress candidate Sukhdeo Bhagat and Chamra Linda, the incumbent Bishunpur MLA from JMM who is independent. Bhagat, a former civil servant turned politician, served two terms as an MLA from the Lohardaga assembly segment and led the Congress in Jharkhand as its state president until 2017.
In 2019, Bhagat switched to the BJP after the party selected IPS-turned-politician Rameshwar Oraon as its candidate for the assembly segment. Bhagat lost that election and returned to Congress two years later.
Linda previously contested the seat as a Trinamool Congress candidate in 2014, finishing third with 1.18 lakh votes.
