India News Live Updates: Nearly 50 flights receive bomb threats on Tue; around Rs 600 cr loss likely for airlines in 9 days

Nearly 80 domestic and international flights received bomb threats in less than 24 hours that later turned out to be hoaxes, keeping thousands of passengers and security agencies on tenterhooks. The estimated losses incurred by airlines due to the disruptions would be around Rs 600 crore, according to two former airline officials.

On Tuesday alone, around 50 flights, including 13 each of IndiGo and Air India received bomb threats. Akasa Air got the threats for over 12 flights and as many as 11 flights of Vistara also received the threats, the sources in the know said.

Around 30 flights of IndiGo, Air India and Vistara got bomb threats on Monday night, they added.

In nine days, more than 170 flights operated by Indian carriers have received bomb threats, mostly through social media, that also forced the diversion of some of the international flights.

On average, disruption to a domestic flight would cost around Rs 1.5 crore while the expenses would be around Rs 5-5.5 crore for an international flight, an official, who has worked in the finance department of a domestic airline, told PTI.

A back-of-the-envelope calculation shows that the average cost of disruption caused to domestic and international flights would be around Rs 3.5 crore, and for more than 170 flights, the total expenses or loss for the airlines would be around Rs 600 crore.

Amidst the rise in AQI levels in the national capital, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai writes to the transport ministers of Haryana, UP, and Rajasthan, requesting them to ban the entry of diesel buses from these states into the national capital.

"I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the increasing air pollution levels in Delhi with the onset of current winter season. One major component of this air pollution is vehicular emissions largely attributed to the significant number of diesel buses entering the city from Rajasthan. The impact of diesel emissions on air quality is well established, and the large influx of such buses significantly contribute to the degradation of air quality in Delhi, posing serious health risks to the residents," said Rai in a letter.

He added, "Diesel buses emit a considerable amount of harmful pollutants responsible for respiratory diseases and other health issues. Delhi is already grappling with poor air quality, and this additional burden from interstate traffic is aggravating the situation."

He stated, "In light of this, I kindly request your esteemed Office to consider restricting the entry of diesel buses from Rajasthan entering Delhi or implementing stricter regulations to control their emission norms. Together we can work out implementing more effective solutions like transition to CNG or Electric Buses for interstate transport along with strictly enforcing vehicle pollution norms."

"By taking proactive steps, we can collectively work towards reducing air pollution, ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for the capital. I hope this request will be given due consideration for the betterment of the environment and public health. I look forward to positive action from your Government on this sensitive issue," he further stated.

The Sangli police arrested an 18-year-old college student for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl multiple times inside a cafe since Nov 2023.
The girl and her parents filed a complaint with the Vishrambaug Police Station on Sunday stating that the girl was threatened by the accused, Arihant Sanjay Chanchure from Kupwad.

The police said, he threatened to circulate the objectionable photos he took inside the cafe on social media. According to the victim and her father, he did circulate the pictures. The police, accordingly, arrested Chanchure and registered a case under the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act against the accused. Activists from Sangli city claimed that cafes have become dark rooms for objectionable activities among youths.

The police have asked all the cafe operators to remove the cabins or compartments from their establishments.

Genealogist Lenora Gobert has uncovered the identities of five enslaved people believed to be buried on the site of a proposed $9.4 billion Formosa Plastics facility in southeast Louisiana. Her research, published by the Louisiana Bucket Brigade and Inclusive Louisiana, identified the individuals as Stanley, Harry, Simon, Betsy, and Rachel, who ranged in age from 9 to 31 when they died on the plantation that once occupied the land. Gobert’s findings are part of a broader movement by local community groups, many descendants of enslaved individuals, to protect cultural heritage sites in St. James Parish. The community groups have been opposing the industrial development that threatens these significant historical lands.

In 2020, an archaeological report commissioned by Formosa acknowledged the presence of at least one burial site with human remains on the property. While the company has claimed a commitment to protecting the burial site by fencing it off, critics argue that more needs to be done to honour and protect these remains. Formosa faced legal setbacks in 2022 when a judge cancelled the company’s air permits due to both environmental concerns and the cultural significance of the land. However, this decision was overturned in 2023 by the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal.

Deputy US Treasury secretary Wally Adeyemo on Monday spoke with Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa and they discussed security and economic stability in the West Bank, the Department of Treasury said.

Adeyemo and Mustafa also discussed the Palestinian Authority’s efforts to improve its anti-money laundering and countering the financing of terrorism regime, the department said.

It added that Adeyemo "stressed the importance of preventing terrorists and violent extremists" from raising, using, and moving funds in the West Bank.

The department said they also spoke about importance of the correspondent banking relationships between Israeli and Palestinian banks to the security and economic stability of the region.
