NEW DELHI: A Kolkata special court on Tuesday ordered Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in eight-day custody after his arrest in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the state-run facility.

He, along with three others, is being investigated over allegations of corruption and financial misconduct at the institution.

Ghosh with vendors Biplav Singha and Suman Hazar, and his security aide Afsar Ali, was arrested after a probe by the CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch. This action follows a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta high court, which ordered the CBI investigation into the financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The CBI, which made the arrests, argued in court that there was a network of individuals involved in the misconduct and emphasised the need for further interrogation to uncover the full extent of the nexus.

In the court proceedings, the CBI sought a 10-day custody for the accused, saying, that additional offences might surface during the investigation.

However, the judge decided to remand the four individuals to eight days of custody.

The court has set the next hearing for September 10, at which time the findings from the ongoing investigation may be presented.
