Justice V Ramasubramanian appointed NHRC chairperson
CHENNAI: Former judge of Supreme Court judge Justice V Ramasubramanian has been appointed chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
“In exercise of the power conferred on me by sub-section (1) of Section 4 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, I, Droupadi Murmu, President of India, do hereby appoint Shri Justice V Ramasubramanian (Retd), to be the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office,” read a notification made public on Monday.
Born on June 30, 1958, Justice Ramasubramanian did his graduation in chemistry at Vivekananda College in Chennai before doing his law in the Madras Law College. On Feb 16, 1983, he enrolled in the Bar and was appointed additional judge of the court on July 31, 2006. He was made a permanent judge on Nov 9, 2009.
Justice Ramasubramanian authored scores of scholarly judgments in his parent high court before being transferred to the High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on April 27, 2016.
When the high court was bifurcated, Justice Ramasubramanian was retained as a judge of the High Court of Telangana at Hyderabad with effect from Jan 1, 2019. He was elevated as Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh high court on June 22, 2019. He became a judge of the Supreme Court on Sept 23, 2019. He attained superannuation in the Supreme Court in June 2023.
