NEW DELHI: Days after the Supreme Court him to six months in jail, Justice
CS Karnan
has left the country, his legal advisor confirmed today.
"Justice Karnan has left the country," said the Calcutta High Court Justice's legal advisor today.
On Tuesday, Justice Karnan became the
first sitting high court judge to be sentenced to jail . His conviction was an attempt to end months of defiance. After all,
Justice Karnan sentenced Chief Justice of India JS Khehar and six other SC judges to five years in jail under the SC/ST Act.
However, since he was sentenced, the
Calcutta HC
judge has been giving a hard time to law enforcement authorities in West Bengal and
Tamil Nadu.
According to earlier reports, Karnan went to Chennai on Monday, but when a
West Bengal Police
team raided the government guest house in Tamil Nadu's capital, he had already "escaped". The police raids continued yesterday too but failed to trace the law-evading judge.
Earlier this month, the SC ordered Karnan to appear before a medical board for a mental health evaluation but
he refused to comply . This order came after Justice Karnan defied the Supreme Court once again and did not appear before it on March 31.
The apex court had issued the arrest warrant against Justice Karnan to ensure his presence before it on March 31 in a contempt case.
