CHENNAI: Terming the byelection in R K Nagar constituency as a precursor to the 2016 assembly elections, Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday evening appealed to voters to cast their votes for her as she wants to win by a huge margin.
Campaigning for the June 27 byelection for the first time, the AIADMK chief said, “The byelection has been forced on us, and I am the candidate here.

Winning is different from winning by a huge margin. My aim is to win by a huge margin.”
Jayalalithaa addressed a huge gathering at Tiruvottiyur with her friend N Sasikalaa standing behind her.
She said it was their fear of defeat that made opposition parties like the DMK boycott the byelection.
Jayalalithaa sought votes by highlighting the work done by the AIADMK government in the last four years.
Reeling out statistics of the number of free schemes and other welfare measures, including Amma brand schemes, Jayalalithaa said the AIADMK government had freed the state from power cuts due to addition of 4992MW of capacity.
“Due to the increase in the power capacity, we have no power cuts and many industries and youth have benefited,” she said.

Highlighting the works undertaken by the government in RK Nagar, Jayalalithaa said a sub-station was set up at a cost of Rs 51 crore, thousands of multi-storey apartments were constructed and inner roads were laid.
“At Meenambal Nagar, a maternity hospital has been constructed and many pregnant women are being treated. More than 47,000 families have benefited from various schemes,” she said.
She said there were 10 Amma canteens and five full-time public distribution system outlets in the constituency, besides a number of Amma pharmacies.
