JAIPUR: The Jaipur rural police had identified Ajit Singh Chaudhary as the man who raped the 20-year-old Japanese tourist within 12 hours of the crime taking place, officials said. While the rape occurred late on Sunday, Chaudhary was identified around noon on Monday. The police has raided many of his possible hideouts, but he managed to evade arrest.
The police started its investigation on the basis of their theory that if the accused had brought the woman to Mozmabad village, nearly 50 km from Jaipur, he should be related to the place in some way, said IG, Jaipur range, DC Jain who supervised the entire investigation. Jain himself camped in Dudu to speed up the accused's identification.
"The way Chaudhary befriended the woman at Jal Mahal, we were clear from the very beginning that he was a tout. So we started searching a youth who was known as a tourist guide in this rural area. We soon started getting clues about his identity," said the officer.
Sources said that surveillance of all the mobile calls made from the area during the time when the rape took place also helped the police as the accused was constantly in touch with his friends and relatives who have been arrested by the police for abetting the crime.
"Within a few hours, we were able to get concrete clues. We also reached the cooperative society's office where Ajit Singh Chaudhary was planning to keep the woman hostage," said the officer.
The victim was in a state of shock and hysteria, so she wasn't able to help the police identify the exact place where Chaudhary raped her.
"Chaudhary has a case of attacking some villagers in Mozmabad in 2013. The police had filed a chargesheet in the case. The fact that Chaudhary was well known in Mozmabad also helped us in the investigation," said the officer.
The officer added that a medical examination of the woman has been conducted. Though she is currently staying in Jaipur to help the police with investigation, she will soon leave for her country.
"We are likely to arrest Chaudhary anytime. We will file a chargesheet against him and other accused within a few days of arresting him so that the victim can get justice as soon as possible," said Jain.
