For the countless hearts that Sengeni from the film Jai Bhim tugged at, Parvathi Ammal, the real woman behind the character, is oddly dissociated from the clamour and uproar her story has incited in the past few weeks.
“To me, it’s an old nightmare — familiar but not softened in the least,” says the septuagenarian widow of Rajakannu, as we chat up inside her rundown hut tucked far away inside the dark, waterlogged alleys of Madha Koil slum in Mugalivakkam, on the outskirts of Chennai.
