NEW DELHI: Industrialist Rahul Bajaj passed away at the age of 83 on Saturday. He breathed his last around 2.30pm.

Bajaj is survived by sons, Rajiv and Sanjiv Bajaj, and daughter Sunaina Kejriwal.

. He stepped down as the non-executive chairman of Bajaj Auto in April 2021.

After taking charge of the Bajaj group business in 1965, Rahul Bajaj led it to the growth path.

Under his stewardship, flagship firm Bajaj Auto saw its turnover growing to Rs 12,000 crore from just Rs 7.2 crore .

Bajaj was elected to Rajya Sabha in June 2006 and remained a member till 2010.

He was also a former chairman of the International Business Council, World Economic Forum and a former member of the South Asia advisory board of Harvard Business School.

Rahul Bajaj stepped down from his position of non-executive director and chairman of Bajaj Auto on April 30 last year.

Rahul Bajaj was a former member of the International Advisory Council of the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC.

The industrialist spearheaded the CSR activities of the Bajaj Group of companies and charitable trusts including Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation.

Bajaj was recipient of many awards, including the Padma Bhushan and honorary doctorates from many universities.

Tributes and condolences have started pouring in for Rahul Bajaj. President Kovind in a tweet called him "a doyen of Indian industry" who was passionate about his priorities.




PM Modi in his condolence said Bajaj "will be remembered for his noteworthy contributions to the world of commerce and industry."

Bajaj had "brought transformation in society especially in poor and middle-class people with his two-wheel technology - a Bajaj Bike!," NCP chief Sharad Pawar said.



"My heartfelt tributes to Rahul Bajaj, a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist and former chairman of Bajaj. I have had a personal relationship with Padma Bhushan awardee Rahul ji for many years," Union minister Nitin Gadkari said on Twitter.
