Indian nationals in Syria safe after rebels seize Damascus: Government sources

NEW DELHI: The government confirmed on Sunday that all Indian nationals in Syria are safe following the capture of Damascus by Islamist rebels, which led to the ousting of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, as per sources.

Embassy remains operationalGovernment sources assured that the Indian embassy in Damascus continues to function and is in contact with all 90 Indian nationals in Syria, including 14 working with UN organizations. "Our Embassy continues to remain operational in Damascus. The Embassy is in touch with all Indian nationals, and they are safe," a source said.

The embassy has also reiterated its availability to assist Indian nationals as the situation unfolds in the war-torn country.

Assad's rule endsThe fall of Damascus early Sunday marks the end of Assad’s five-decade-long family rule in Syria. Assad reportedly fled to an undisclosed location, leaving the country under rebel control.

The government continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety and welfare of Indian citizens in Syria.
