The home ministry informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that other initiatives like the launch of Sanchar Saarthi portal to empower mobile subscribers, strengthen their security and increase awareness about citizen-centric initiatives of the government have enabled the disconnection of 73 lakh mobile connections taken on forged documents and blocking of nearly 2.3 lakh mobile handsets across the country.

Almost 11 lakh lost or stolen mobile sets were traced through the Sanchar Saarthi portal.

In reply to a question, junior home minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar said 70,995 point of sales (POIS) were blacklisted and 365 FIRs lodged against the blacklisted POS. Also, 7 lakh whatsapp accounts linked to mobile connections obtained on fake documents, were disengaged. Nearly 40 lakh mobile connections were disconnected after citizens reported not having taken them. Over 20,000 principle entities sending SMS, 31,615 headers and 2 lakh content templates were blocked, said Kumar.

Information on more than 5 crore disconnected mobile connections was shared on an online digital intelligence platform, with reasons with the concerned stakeholders, for prevention of cybercrime and financial frauds, he added.
