India and US: Not allies but something like it

Since the inking of a civil nuclear deal in 2008, the US-India relationship has often been described as a strategic partnership. This characterisation is apt, but what does a strategic partnership actually mean? Prime Minister Modi’s state visit to Washington offers an opportunity to take stock of a partnership that comfortably occupies a middle ground between transactional relationship and alliance, and that has arguably never been stronger.
