In hills of Uttarakhand, death is 'celebrated' with a dance

DEHRADUN: A death has occurred in Dhayat village of Uttarkashi district. The deceased is Chan Singh Jyada, 86, a retired government official. As his funeral procession makes its way to the cremation ground, it stops midway, and a group of persons, with ‘dhol-dhamau’ (traditional drums) slung on their shoulders, start a ritual dance to the beat of the drums. They are accompanied by musicians playing the ransingha — a handcrafted trumpet, popular in the hills.
