'I have decided to disown him': Mamata hits out at brother Babun after he objects to Trinamool's Howrah candidate

NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday disowned her brother Babun Banerjee and accused him of creating problems before every elections. Babun had expressed displeasure over Trinamool re-nominating Prasun Banerjee from Howrah Lok Sabha seat.

"I don't like greedy people. I don't believe in dynasty politics that I will give him ticket in elections. I have decided to disown him and cut off all relationship with him," Mamata said when asked about her brother's opposition to party candidate from Howrah.

Prasun Banerjee, a former footballer, is a two-time Lok Sabha MP of the TMC from the Howrah seat.


Opposing Prasun's candidature, Babun said, "I am not happy with the selection of the candidate from Howrah Lok Sabha seat. Prasun Banerjee is not the right choice. There were many capable candidates who were overlooked."

Mamata's brother also hinted that he could contest as an independent if needed, though he ruled out joining the BJP.



"I know Didi (Mamata Banerjee) would not agree with me. But if needed, I will contest as independent from Howrah Lok Sabha seat," he said.

"As long Mamatadi is there, I would never quit the party and neither would I join any other political party. Yes as I am connected to sports, I know many BJP leaders, who too are connected with sports," he added.

Mamata, who faces a formidable electoral challenge in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, has announced candidates for all 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state after her seat-sharing talks with the Congress failed.

At a time when she is under intense opposition fire in the state, the last thing Mamata would want is discordant notes from within the family.
