I bought medal from Sohrab's son: Shop-owner
MUMBAI: Shop-owner Abdul Wahid said that he had bought the Sohrab Modi's memorabilia directly from Modi's son Mehli a year-and-a-half ago when the latter was in the process of selling the family's Cuffe Parade flat before immigrating to Dubai.
"I still have the purchase slip with me as proof," he said. "The stuff was lying with me for such a long time that I had even planned to put an advertisement in the newspapers, so that interested parties could learn about it and come to my shop.

But before I could do that, I suddenly got at least ten calls inquiring about the trophy. I don't understand the sudden interest."
A star famed as much for his booming voice as his directorial skills, Sohrab Modi was the eleventh recipient of the Phalke award. He owned two cinema houses in Mumbai — Minerva Movietone (recently bought by Osian's auction house) and New Empire (now owned by Burge Cooper).

His repertoire of films included several Shakespearean adaptations and historicals, notably 'Jhansi ki Rani' and 'Sikander', which is regarded as his most acclaimed work, with Prithviraj Kapoor in the title role. Modi died of cancer at the age of 86 in 1984.
Burge Cooper said that he was sorry to hear that the medal had ended up in Chor Bazaar. "It's really sad, but there is no one left in India with a direct connection to Sohrab Modi's family," he said.
Osian's said they had also been approached by Modi's son. "A few months ago, he told us that all that he had left with him was a mirror which used to hang in Minerva.
We bought if from him for about Rs 30,000," said chairman Neville Tuli. Wahid's shop also has a Lion's Club Award trophy which was once presented to Jackie Shroff. Its selling price is Rs 1,500 but there have been no takers.
