As the Indian cricket board gets set to auction the media rights for its premier sporting event, a look at why its earnings are expected to jump dramatically

When the Indian Premier League (IPL) began in 2008, Sony snapped up the media rights for the T20 tournament at ₹8,200 crore for 10 years, an astronomical sum at the time. That amounts to the media company paying ₹820 crore per year. When Star bought the rights to the tournament for five years in 2017, it paid ₹16,347 crore, at around ₹3,269 crore per year.

But if predictions about this year’s auction are correct, the Indian cricket board could net in excess of ₹9,000 crore per year starting from 2023 after it completes the auction.
