How old is too old to practice medicine

Many doctors never retire and continue to treat patients until the very end. So, physicians must assess their own capabilities as they get older

Physicians with a private practice have no retirement age. In teaching hospitals, it used to be 58 years, which was later increased to 65. Very few physicians opt for a total retirement. As they age, surgeons take the help of assistants. Some opt for semi-retirement, which means working for limited hours and not encouraging emergency intensive care admissions. These keep you awake most of the night.

Whether there should be a mandatory retirement age remains a hotly debated topic in the US, where 30% of the doctors are seniors, according to the American Medical Association (AMA).
