Blood group mismatch prevented family members from donating kidneys to their loved ones. So, they opted for an exchange of organs between the two families in Maharashtra

A year ago, Kalyan resident Rafik Shah and Ghatkopar-based ayurvedic doctor Rahul Yadav met each other in the dialysis clinic of KEM Hospital in Mumbai. On January 10, when they left the hospital, it was with a unique bond: Shah (48) had a kidney donated by Yadav’s mother, Girija, and the 27-year-old doctor had a kidney from Shah’s wife, Khushnuma.

These rare interfaith transplants took place in KEM Hospital on December 15 last year. “Interfaith kidney swap transplants have been done on a handful of occasions in the past as well,” said Dr Tukaram Jamale, who heads the hospital’s nephrology department.
