How Kerala’s co-op banks became a den of corruption

The co-operative banking sector, once Kerala’s pride, is now a cesspool — no auditing, little professionalism and, above all, vested interests making a killing and sharing the spoils

Recent reports exposing the looting, corruption and money laundering in some of the co-operative banks in Kerala indicate a deeper decadence gripping the sector.

Simplistic and mechanical formulations and political rhetoric will only delay or even totally negate the possibilities of rebuilding trust in the sector that is a vital pillar of Kerala’s economy.
