Just over a decade ago, India was a net importer of French fries. Now, Gujarat has single-handedly catapulted the country to becoming a fries exporter

It was almost two decades ago that the entry of McDonald’s into Gujarat introduced the taste buds of Gujaratis to French fries. Now, the potatoes from Gujarat are going places.
After Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a state-of-the-art potato-processing plant started by Banas Dairy in Deodar in April, homegrown dairy giant Amul started exporting potato snacks, especially French fries, to the US and Canada, home to fast-food giant McDonald’s and frozen-food company McCain, respectively.
