How did Maharashtrians become 'untouchables' in Mumbai?

First it was Muslims, then Christians, then single women, then single men too, and then anyone remotely connected with the film or TV industry. So, now when a woman has been barred from renting a shop in Mulund for being Maharashtrian, one must ask – how did we get here, Mumbai?

A viral video has once again prompted questions on the myriad reasons housing societies can cite to deny a person property in Mumbai. An entrepreneur being denied a property in a Mumbai housing society because she is Maharashtrian has prompted widespread outrage, political reactions and a criminal case.

Trupti Devrukhkar has a digital marketing business and had approached a broker with her husband seeking to rent an office property. The broker informed them of an office space that was available on RP Road in the northeastern suburb of Mulund.
