Sharad Pawar's 1978 rebellion to Ajit's move, it's the same story

Defections have been a part of India’s politics since Independence — from ‘Aya Ram Gaya Ram’ of Haryana to Sharad Pawar, Eknath Shinde and now Ajit Pawar in Maharashtra — making and breaking governments

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar on July 2 pulled off a stunning revolt, triggering a vertical split in the party and joining hands with the ruling Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance in Maharashtra to become the deputy chief minister.

While NCP supremo Sharad Pawar called his nephew’s rebellion a case of “robbery”, this chapter in Maharashtra’s politics seems like a role reversal for the veteran leader himself.
