They sold kisses! There were many unfamiliar things that the world of Archie comics introduced us to in pre-liberalisation India, but none as remarkable as the fact that in the US, kisses could be retailed.
Now, it is true that outside of Riverdale, I have not come across any example that suggests that this was a widespread phenomenon, but then our only exposure to everyday American life was only the world of Archies.
