India in 2023 witnessed numerous horrendous crime incidents that were a disgrace to humanity. The dreadful incidents made us ponder over the nightmarish vision of the future. Despite having laws, we saw women fighting for their respect and people struggling for their lives. Here are some of the horrifying crime incidents that sent shockwaves across the country.

New Year horror: Delhi hit-and-drag case

When Indians woke up on January 1, 2023, they were left dumbstruck over a horrible incident that occurred in the national capital. A 20-year-old woman was killed after being dragged by a car for several kilometres in Delhi in the early hours of New Year. Cops traced down the suspected car and five occupants were apprehended from their houses. The horrifying incident was widely condemned, both in India and abroad.

Umesh Pal murder case

On February 24, Umesh Pal, a lawyer and crucial witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case, was fatally shot along with his two bodyguards outside his residence in the Sulem Sarai area of Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The murder case that shook the nation led to high-decibel fights between the state government and the opposition parties. According to police, gangster Atiq Ahmed's henchmen were allegedly responsible for the attack. The CCTV footage shows Umesh Pal being ambushed with bullets and bombs upon reaching his house. Some suspects have been arrested, some encountered, and others remain fugitives. Concerns were raised over law and order and the double-engine government in Uttar Pradesh led by CM Yogi Adityanath.

Nikki Yadav murder case

One cannot forget the heinous murder of 23-year-old Nikki Yadav, who was allegedly killed by her live-in partner Sahil Gehlot. Gehlot stuffed the victim's body inside a fridge in his family-owned dhaba in Delhi's Najafgarh. Shortly after killing his girlfriend, Gehlot went off to marry another woman the same day. Police claimed that the accused strangled his girlfriend to death in his car near Kashmere Gate and drove around 30-40 km to his dhaba along with her body.

Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed encounter

On the night of April 15, 2023, the nation was left frightened when people witnessed the live killing of nefarious gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf in the Prayagraj district, Uttar Pradesh. They were shot dead by assailants posing as TV reporters. The incident occurred while they were being escorted to the hospital for a medical checkup in police custody. The attackers fired at point-blank range, leading to the immediate deaths of Atiq and his brother. The incident left everyone in shock, following which cops apprehended three youths on the spot.

Shahbad Dairy murder case

Delhi this year once again was the centre of attraction for a crime in the Shahbad Dairy area when Sahil Khan brutally murdered his 16-year-old girlfriend. He was seen stabbing his girlfriend multiple times and crushing her skull with a rock. The CCTV footage captured the chilling incident.

Numerous passersby witnessed the crime but did not intervene. The incident that occurred in the national capital was a disgrace to humanity when the girl was struggling for her life but no one came forward to protect her. The motive behind the murder was Sahil's desire for revenge after the victim, Sakshi, rejected him in front of her friends.

Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi murder case

The nation once again witnessed a shocking murder when Rashtriya Rajput Karni Sena president Sukhdev Singh Gogamedi was fatally shot in his Jaipur home on 5, 2023. Gangster Rohit Godara, who is allegedly associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, killed Gogamedi. CCTV footage showed the assailants firing multiple rounds after sitting with Gogamedi. Following nationwide protests, the Delhi Police Crime Branch apprehended the shooters and an accomplice in Chandigarh.
