Researchers in Puducherry, India, have identified new lineages of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV). The virus caused a notable outbreak among children between November 2022 and March 2023. The study, conducted by researchers at the Regional Level Viral Research & Diagnostic Laboratory and the Department of Pediatrics at JIPMER, examined nasal swabs collected from January 2021 to June 2024.
Researchers found a 9.6% positivity rate for HMPV among tested patients during the outbreak period. Infections peaked in December and January. The majority of cases occurred in children under one year old, with 67% experiencing wheezing and 6.9% having seizures.
