Himachal Pradesh today recorded its highest turnout in Assembly polls, with 74.45 per cent of voters taking part

"People have given their mandate. The five-year corrupt rule of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh is going to end. We will get over 60 seats and the Congress tally will be confined to singe digit. It will disappear from the state after results are announced," BJP media head Anil Baluni said.

The only central university of the state has become a poll issue in three constituencies — Dharamshala, Dehra and Shahpur. The fact of the matter is that ever since the Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) came into existance, in 2010, repeated governments have failed to build a permanent campus for this institute due to political tussles between the BJP and the Congress.

"Today polling is taking place in 'Devbhoomi' Himachal Pradesh. I urge all voters to take part in the mahaparva of democracy and vote in record numbers," the Prime Minister tweeted.

Young voters are going to play decisive role in the assembly election this time as out of total 50.25 lakh voters registered in Himachal Pradesh, 25.24 lakh are below the age of 40.

Employment opportunities, transport and women empowerment are key issues in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls while caste, religion and the top leadership also matter, a survey has found.

The fate of some of the biggest political leaders in Himachal Pradesh will be sealed in electronic voting machines by Thursday evening as more than 50 lakh people will cast their votes for 68-member legislative assembly.

The election results, however, will be announced 40 days later on December 18 along with those of the Gujarat polls, to be held next month.
