NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said that there is a "there is a hidden undercurrent" and asserted that the Congress party will do very well in the next two years.

"I think the Congress party will do very well in the next two years. I think it will. I think there is a hidden undercurrent building … I think (the outcome) will surprise people," Rahul said.

Rahul made these comments during a media interaction at the National Press Club in the US. The former Congress president is currently on a three-city tour in the US.

Regarding the unity of the opposition in India, Gandhi affirmed that they are fairly united and becoming more so with time. . "And I think it's getting more and more united. We're having conversations with all the opposition (parties). I think quite a lot of good work is happening, " he said.

"It's a complicated discussion because there are spaces where we have competing also with (other) opposition (parties). So, it's a little bit of give and take as required. But I'm confident that that will happen,” Gandhi added.

During the media interaction, Gandhi also addressed questions regarding press and religious freedoms in India, minority rights, and the state of the economy. He expressed concerns about the concentration of power in institutions and the press, emphasizing the need for independent and unbiased institutions to safeguard the country's democratic fabric.
