Haryana and J&K Assembly Elections 2024 Live Updates: Congress released first list of candidates for Haryana polls. It was announced Vinesh Phogat will contest from Julana. This came just hours after Phogat and Bajrang Punia joined Congress party.
After joining the grand old party, Phogat said that Congress was with her during her tough times. She further accused the BJP IT cell of maligning her after she raised her voice.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India (ECI) released a notification on September 3 regarding the publication of exit polls for the upcoming legislative assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. The notification prohibits the publication of exit polls by any means of print, electronic media, or dissemination in any other manner during the period from 7 am on Wednesday, September 18, to 6:30 pm on Saturday, October 5.
"The period between 7.00am on 18.09.2024 (Wednesday) and 6.30pm on 05.10.2024 (Saturday), as the period during which conducting and publishing or publicising exit poll by means of the print or electronic media or dissemination in any other manner whatsoever, the result of any exit poll in connection with the aforesaid general election, shall be prohibited," the notification said.
Furthermore, the notice specifies that the display of any election matter, including results of opinion polls or other poll surveys, in any electronic media will be prohibited during the 48 hours leading up to the conclusion of the poll.
The Haryana legislative assembly, consisting of 90 members, will hold its voting on October 5, with the deadline for filing nominations being September 12.
Meanwhile in J&K, union home minister Amit Shah released BJP's election manifesto and talked about party's agenda ahead of polls. Jammu and Kashmir has 90 assembly constituencies, with 7 seats reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 9 for Scheduled Tribes (STs). According to the ECI, Jammu and Kashmir has 88.06 lakh eligible electors. In the previous Assembly elections, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) secured 28 seats, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 25, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) obtained 15, and the Congress won 12 seats.
The upcoming elections will be the first in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370. Polling in Jammu and Kashmir will take place in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1.
On August 31, the ECI revised the polling date for the Haryana Assembly elections from October 1 to October 5 and postponed the counting of votes for both the Jammu and Kashmir and Haryana assemblies from October 4 to October 8.
