Where was the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation hiding when Muslims in India were lynched, abused and their livelihoods threatened?
BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal’s remarks on Prophet Muhammad have stirred a hornet’s nest the world over. Sharma’s condescending and arrogant outburst on a TV debate, wherein she made disparaging remarks with reference to Prophet Muhammad’s marriage to Hazrat Ayesha as also to his night journey on Buraq, his steed, referred to as the Night of the Meraj, have hurt and angered Muslims across the world.
This has created a diplomatic nightmare for the Indian government, with our ambassadors summoned by various Muslim majority nations comprising the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). This has endangered both our geo-political and geo-economic strategic interests in South Asia, West Asia, Central Asia and North Africa. It has damaged the country’s reputation of being a multi-religious, multi-cultural, liberal secular democratic society. India is now being seen as a belligerent, intolerant, violent majoritarian Hindu state, which oppresses and openly discriminates against its religious minorities. Clearly the Modi government has undermined India's international standing and respect among the comity of nations.
