PUNE: Hindu Mahasabha leader and author of Gandhihatya aani me, Gopal Godse passed away at midnight on Saturday. He was 86 and is survived by his wife, son and daughter Himani Savarkar, who contested 2004 Lok Sabha election from Pune. His last rites were performed on Sunday morning at Vaikunth crematorium. Noted scholar S N Navalgundkar, Vikram Savarkar and film maker Rajdatta were present to pay homage. Gopal was indicted in the Mahatma Gandhi assassination case and underwent imprisonment for 14 years at Nasik and Aurangabad.
Born on June 12, 1920, at Rajgurunagar, Gopal was the younger sibling of Nathuram Godse and authored many books, including Panchavanna kotinche bali, Aparichitanchya Krantikatha and Faashi aani Nathuram Godse, to name a few. Godse, who hailed from a middle class family, was the last remaining eyewitness of Mahatma Gandhi's assassination.
