Somdev Devvarman’s earliest towel memory is from two decades ago.
It was the 1998 Chennai Open, the all-Indian combine of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi were blazing a trail. “They were using the same towel, it was grossing us out,” says Devvarman, who had just blown out 13 candles on his birthday cake. While the craft that the duo churned out had the crowd on its feet, their towel etiquette wasn’t quite model conduct.
