India and Sri Lanka signed a landmark defence cooperation agreement, signaling deeper strategic ties between the two countries. This pact underscores India’s efforts to counter growing Chinese influence in the Indian Ocean region, with President Dissanayake reaffirming Sri Lanka's commitment to safeguarding India's security interests.

Seven MoUs in key sectors

Apart from the defense agreement, PM Modi and President Dissanayake oversaw the signing of six other MoUs across various sectors, including energy, digital infrastructure, healthcare, and trade. A major highlight was the virtual inauguration of the Sampur solar power project, which is a key step in Sri Lanka’s clean energy transition.

PM Modi met with leaders of the Indian-Origin Tamil community and announced support for the construction of 10,000 houses, healthcare facilities, and other development projects for the community in Sri Lanka. Modi described them as a "living bridge" connecting India and Sri Lanka for over two centuries.

India's assistance to Sri Lanka during its economic crisis was acknowledged as "unprecedented," with Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha highlighting the $4.5 billion aid India provided. India also committed to helping with debt restructuring and proposed a currency swap agreement to stabilize Sri Lanka’s economy.

During the visit, PM Modi met with several renowned Sri Lankan cricketers, including Marvan Atapattu, Aravinda de Silva, and Sanath Jayasuriya, who praised his leadership and India’s growing global influence. Modi shared conversations about cricket, including the 1996 World Cup win, further strengthening people-to-people ties.
