Former Atlas cycles president Salil Kapoor dies by suicide

NEW DELHI: Former Atlas cycles president Salil Kapoor on Tuesday reportedly died by shooting himself at his residence on Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Lane.

The incident was discovered by Kapoor’s manager in the three-storey residence on Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Road. After the discovery, Kapoor was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead. Further investigation revealed that his wife and three children were living separately from him.

The Delhi police confirmed the presence of a note at the scene. According to a police officer, "In a note recovered from the spot, the former president of Atlas Cycles purportedly mentioned a 'financial burden' on him."

Kapoor’s manager and his family were residing with him at the time of the incident. Forensic and crime teams have been dispatched to gather evidence from the location.

In 2015, Kapoor had been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of Delhi Police concerning a case of cheating involving Rs 9 crore. He was also booked in two separate cheating cases.

The officer said that in one of the cases, the complainant alleged that Kapoor had deceived him under the guise of purchasing capital gain bonds.

The house has a history of tragedy; Kapoor’s sister-in-law Natasha Kapoor hanged herself to death in the same residence in January 2020.

In her note, Natasha urged her family to take care of themselves but did not explain her reasons for taking such an extreme step.
